Welcome and Weekly Updates
Hello Ray Families! Thank you for your hard work over the past three weeks. Please keep communicating with me, as IEP dates are quickly approaching. I will begin assessing students this week, and I am starting to collect information for their transition plans. We must begin thinking about and talking about HIGH SCHOOL! Please send me any and all high school-related questions you may have! This Week In Class In social studies, students will examine and assess the importance of jobs based on their personal opinions and viewpoints, students will discuss and write about their views and society’s views towards various jobs, and explore biases, and students will recognize the value of jobs that they may not have previously thought important. We will look at child labor practices in America and try to understand how those practices have come to change and why. In math, we are learning about transformations: the math of movement. By the end of this week, students will know the difference between translations, rotations, and reflections. This week, students will focus on seeing these movements in the world and using their best math language to describe movement precisely. In Reading & Writing, we will continue learning about Theme: the message or lesson of a story. This week, students will collaboratively discuss possible themes of fables and use the highlight feature of CommonLit to provide evidence from the text to support their claims. We will read and watch adaptations of fables and discuss possible themes. In Science, we are taking a sidestep to dive deeper into the process of scientific inquiry: the process of questioning and observing. We will talk about how scientists learn and how we can become better scientists by asking good questions, testing our ideas, and making observations. In Academic Enrichment, we will begin Transition assessments to gather information about high school and post-high school plans for our students. Daily Schedule Students should be in classes by 8:45. I will report attendance to their mainstream teachers, who will report attendance through Aspen by 9:00 am. If students are having trouble with technology which will make them late, please email me immediately. Students have lunch from 12:40-1:10. After lunch, they have Specials class (one day a week) and then independent work time until the end of the school day at 3:15. All teachers are assigning independent work for students to complete after lunch every day. Please keep an eye on your student's Google Classrooms to check for daily assignments! After lunch, students will have Specials class one day a week. Homeroom 304 (8th) will have PE on Tuesday at 1:10, and Homeroom 307 (7th) will have PE on Thursday at 1:10. Students will be seeing their service providers during the week as well. Announcements Please complete these important forms!! Back-to-School Packets You can return the form two ways:

Welcome and Weekly Updates
Hello Ray Families! Thank you for your patience and flexibility over the past two weeks. We are starting to get into a nice rhythm with Remote Learning, and while there are still some kinks to work out, students have been ready and eager to learn every day. I really appreciate all of the support and kindness you've shown me the past two weeks. Together we make a strong learning team for our students. Students will practice labeling and demonstrating the different transformations, as well as strengthen their math language by describing transformations with words. In Reading & Writing, we will begin learning about Theme: the message or lesson of a story. This week, students will collaboratively discuss possible themes of short stories and provide evidence from the text to support their claims. We will read and watch an adaptation of Ray Bradbury's short story All Summer in a Day and discuss possible themes. In Science, we are using the Question Formulation Technique to explore Cell Theory. By the end of this week, students should understand the fundamental principles of Cell Theory: all living things are made of cells, cells are the building blocks of life, and all cells come from pre-existing cells. In Academic Enrichment, we will be learning how to use Google Calendar and Calendar invitations. We will also begin Transition assessments to gather information about high school and post-high school plans for our students. Daily Schedule Our PE teacher, Mr. McNaughton, will come visit this week to talk with 6th grade about Specials schedule. Mr. Thomas, our social worker, will begin seeing students this week. Miss Kausel, our new Speech Pathologist will also begin seeing students this week. Miss McGehee will also begin seeing students this week! Students should be in classes by 8:45. Welcome and Weekly Updates
Hello Ray Families! This week we will continue talking about our classroom routines and procedures. Last week I was able to learn everyone's level of computer skills, so now I have a better idea for how to make remote learning as fun and easy as I can. We definitely need to keep practicing and there is much to learn as well, but I bet by the end of this week we will become much faster with and smarter about computers. In Social Studies, we will begin using Circles as part of our classroom routines for discussion. If you have some time, please watch this video about how and why I use Circles in my classroom. In Math, we will begin using Prodigy and students will create goals for their Prodigy progress. If you can, please check out this information about setting goals with Prodigy. In Science, we will begin using the Question Formulation Technique to begin conducting investigations and compiling research. We will use the QFT in both Science and Social Studies this year. In Reading and Writing, students will begin exploring their identities as readers and writers. We will begin using our virtual reading and writing notebooks, if we can learn the technical skills necessary in our Academic Enrichment class. We will have our PE teacher, Miss Jerris, as a special guest on Monday morning to help explain how Specials classes will work during remote learning. On Wednesday, we will have a Town Hall Meeting with Principal Neely. Daily Schedule Students should be in classes by 8:45. I will report attendance to their mainstream teachers, who will report attendance through Aspen by 9:00 am. Hello Ray Families! The first day of class is Tuesday, September 8 at 8:45 AM. Please have your student come to class at 8:45 by clicking the link that I emailed them tonight. If you have any trouble getting connected, please reach out to me through email or Remind. I will be checking both and will do my best to help everyone get connected. Please help each other get connected if you can. Let's have each other's backs and make sure we can all be here to learn together! Reminder: Attendance will be taken daily, beginning tomorrow. Students will be considered absent if they do not attend remote learning classes on time. I know that remote learning can be challenging at times, but we are here to support each other through our questions, concerns, and frustrations. If we can work together with patience, flexibility, and forgiveness, we can accomplish a lot this year! This week, we will be learning how to use the different websites and software that will help us with remote learning. In math, we will talk about math mindsets, practice using Desmos, and get connected to apps like Prodigy and Khan Academy. In Reading & Writing, we will experience some Read-Think-Feel Aloud stories, try our first Quick Write activity, and connect to the Chicago Public Library website to check out ebooks. In Social Studies, we will start our Circle practice, discuss the importance of Labor Day, and think about how to conduct research and ask good questions. In Science, we will talk more about creating good questions and how to collect information as evidence. Throughout this week and next, we will talk about our personal identities and how they impact our learning and relationships. We will work to build classroom community by playing games and being supportive classmates in Circles. We will create and use community norms and reminders for respectful, responsible, and safe remote learning. Daily Schedule This is the schedule for the 213 Group of students who are in my class. 8th Grade students who are in mainstream classes should follow the schedule for their homeroom teachers.
